- <p> DIED. BEN CHAPMAN, 84, baseball outfielder and manager; in Hoover,
- Alabama. As a New York Yankee in the '30s, Chapman became identified
- with an aggressive playing style. He led the American League
- in stolen bases in four seasons and appeared in four All-Star
- games. Off the field he was also known for his bumptiousness,
- even locking horns with revered teammate Babe Ruth. In 1945
- he became manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, a posting that
- led to the most infamous episode of his career--a campaign
- of racial taunting aimed at Brooklyn Dodger Jackie Robinson,
- the first black player in the majors.
